Hadith 6958

Narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Shall I not tell you about a girl who is the most beautiful among the Quraysh?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Who is she?" I said, "The daughter of Sayyiduna Hamza." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do you not know that she is the daughter of my foster brother? Indeed, Allah has made unlawful by reason of suckling (fosterage) those relationships which are unlawful by reason of lineage."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The command of Allah, the Exalted, is:
“And do not marry those women whom your fathers married, except what has already passed. Indeed, it is an indecent act, and a cause of hatred, and an evil way.” (Surah An-Nisa: 22)

In the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), a stepmother was also considered part of the inheritance of the deceased; whether to marry her or not depended on the will of the heirs. In fact, the son of the deceased could even marry his father’s wife. Islamic Shari‘ah, by restoring this prohibition and sanctity, declared the stepmother to be a mahram (unmarriageable kin), and set the punishment for one who marries her as execution and confiscation of his wealth.
