Narrated by Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked one of his companions: O so-and-so! Are you married? He replied: No, I do not have the financial means to marry. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you know Surah Al-Ikhlas? He said: Yes, of course. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is one fourth of the Qur'an. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you know Surah Al-Kafirun? He said: Yes, absolutely. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is one fourth of the Qur'an. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you know Surah Az-Zalzalah? He said: Yes, I know it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is one fourth of the Qur'an. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you know Surah An-Nasr? He said: Yes, I know it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is one fourth of the Qur'an. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you know Ayat al-Kursi? He said: Yes, absolutely. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is one fourth of the Qur'an. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then get married, get married, get married. He repeated this three times.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: {وَاِنْاَرَدْتُّمُاسْتِبْدَالَزَوْجٍمَّکَانَزَوْجٍوَّاٰتَیْتُمْاِحْدٰھُنَّقِنْطَارًافَلاَتَاْخُذُوْامِنْہُشَیْئًا} … “And if you wish to replace one wife with another and you have given one of them a treasure as dowry, do not take anything from it.” (Surah an-Nisa: 20) Here, “treasure” refers to the bridal due (mahr).
From the ahadith of the two aforementioned chapters and other evidences related to this subject, it is understood that there is no minimum or maximum amount specified for the mahr. Mention has been made of five dirhams, a waistcloth, and even a ring of iron; in reality, this is the woman’s right, and whatever right she is pleased with will be considered her mahr.
The Hanafis have stipulated a minimum of ten dirhams or an item of equivalent value for the mahr, and they present this narration as evidence: ((لَامَھْرَاَقَلُّمِنْعَشْرَۃِدَرَاھِمَ۔)) … “There is no mahr less than ten dirhams.” (Darqutni: 3/244, Bayhaqi: 7/133) However, this narration is weak; there are objections to two narrators in its chain: one is Hajjaj ibn Arta’ah, who is a mudallis, and the other is Mubashshir ibn Ubayd, who is abandoned (matruk). Moreover, in contrast to this, authentic ahadith have already been mentioned above which indicate a mahr less than ten dirhams.
However, it is necessary to observe restraint and avoid excessiveness regarding the mahr.
