Hadith 6923

Abu Al-Ajfa Salmi says: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Do not be excessive in the dowries of women, because if this thing were a source of honor in this world and piety in the Hereafter, then the person most deserving of it among you would have been the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. He, peace and blessings be upon him, did not marry off his daughters or marry his wives for more than twelve uqiyahs. There is another matter as well: you say about your battles that so-and-so was martyred, so-and-so attained martyrdom; be cautious in this as well. It may be that he burdened the back of his animal or the edge of its saddle in pursuit of gold and silver and trade. Therefore, do not say in this way that so-and-so was martyred, but rather say as Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, used to say: Whoever is martyred in the way of Allah, he is of Paradise.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Twelve uqiyyah amount to four hundred and eighty dirhams. Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Umm Habibah radi Allahu anha was given four thousand dirhams as her dower (mahr), but that was given by Najashi, not by the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. In hadith number (6927), Sayyidah A’ishah mentions the dower as twelve and a half uqiyyah; it is possible that Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu did not mention the fraction.

The statements of Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu and Sayyidah A’ishah radi Allahu anha regarding the dowers of the Mothers of the Believers should be understood as referring to most of the wives of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, because the dower of Sayyidah Khadijah, Sayyidah Juwayriyyah, and Sayyidah Safiyyah radi Allahu anhunna was not twelve uqiyyah.

The meaning of the last part of Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu’s statement is that it is possible that a person outwardly appears to be traveling with a military expedition, but his intention is for trade, and he has actually loaded some goods on his mounts with this intention; therefore, one should exercise caution in immediately declaring everyone a martyr (shahid).
