Hadith 6921

Narrated by Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a trace of yellow color on Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked: What is this? He replied: I have married a woman for a gold piece equal to the weight of a date stone. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: May Allah bless you, give a wedding feast (walimah), even if it is only with one goat.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Imam Nawawi said: The correct view is that this yellow color of saffron and the like is the fragrance of the bride, and from this the color got onto Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman radi Allahu anhu, not that he did this intentionally, because the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has prohibited men from (using) saffron. Similarly, men have also been prohibited from (using) khaluq perfume, because that too is a fragrance for women.

According to the narration of Nasa’i (3375), the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam asked about this color in these words: “Mahyam?” (What is this?). And in response, Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman radi Allahu anhu replied that he had married an Ansari woman.

From these words, it is understood that the reason for the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam’s question was that he had prohibited men from this color, and from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman radi Allahu anhu’s answer, it is known that this color had gotten onto him from his wife.

Therefore, this hadith should not be used as evidence for the permissibility of this colored fragrance for men.
