Hadith 6901

وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا أَنَّ جَارِيَةً بِكْرًا أَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَتْ أَنَّ أَبَاهَا زَوَّجَهَا وَهِيَ كَارِهَةٌ فَخَيَّرَهَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ.
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a virgin girl came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said that her father had married her to a man whom she disliked. So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave her the choice to stay (in the marriage) or not.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The guardian should arrange the matters of the daughters’ marriage with wisdom and prudence, and should create such a way that both he and his daughters are pleased, and the daughters themselves prefer his opinion. By using force, a girl can apparently be made to consent, but tranquility cannot be brought into her life; rather, later on, both the parents of the boy and the girl have to face severe mental distress.
