بَابُ اسْتِثْمَارِ النِّسَاءِ فِي بَنَاتِهِنَّChapter: Seeking the Consent of Women Regarding Their Daughters

عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّهُ خَطَبَ إِلَى نَسِيبٍ لَهُ ابْنَتَهُ قَالَ فَكَانَ هَوَى أُمِّ الْمَرْأَةِ فِي ابْنِ عُمَرَ وَكَانَ هَوَى أَبِيهَا فِي يَتِيمٍ لَهُ قَالَ فَزَوَّجَهَا الْأَبُ يَتِيمَهُ ذَلِكَ فَجَاءَتْ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَتْ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ آمِرُوا النِّسَاءَ فِي بَنَاتِهِنَّ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he sent a marriage proposal for his close relative’s daughter through her lineage. The mother of the girl inclined towards Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), but the father wished to marry her to an orphan under his care, so he married her to that orphan. Her mother came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this matter to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Consult your women regarding the marriage of your daughters.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Consulting mothers regarding their daughters is not because they possess any authority in the marriage contract like a guardian (wali), but rather it is a requirement of good social conduct. This will please the mothers, and through the blessing of this consultation, affection, love, and harmony will be created between the daughters and their husbands. Otherwise, most daughters tend to incline towards their mothers, so if the mothers are not pleased in this matter, there is a risk of discord.
