Hadith 6878

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((لَا نِكَاحَ إِلَّا بِوَلِيٍّ وَالسُّلْطَانُ وَلِيُّ مَنْ لَا وَلِيَّ لَهُ))
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is no marriage without a guardian, and whoever has no guardian, the Sultan will be her guardian.

Benefits: … Imam Hakim, after mentioning the narrations of “There is no marriage except with a guardian (wali),” said: And in this chapter, there are narrations from Ali ibn Abi Talib, Abdullah ibn Abbas, Mu’adh ibn Jabal, Abdullah ibn Umar, Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad, Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, Jabir ibn Abdullah, Abu Hurairah, Imran ibn Husayn, Abdullah ibn Amr, al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, and Anas ibn Malik (radi Allahu anhum), and most of them are authentic. And indeed, the narrations in this regard are also authentic from the wives of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: Aishah, Umm Salamah, and Zaynab bint Jahsh (radi Allahu anhunna) all. … In this chapter, there are hadiths narrated from Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas, Sayyiduna Mu’adh ibn Jabal, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar, Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, Sayyiduna Miqdad ibn Aswad, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, Sayyiduna Jabir ibn Abdullah, Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, Sayyiduna Imran ibn Husayn, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Amr, Sayyiduna Miswar ibn Makhramah, and Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik (radi Allahu anhum); most of these are authentic.
