It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: My daughter, Sayyidah Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her), became a widow after the death of Sayyiduna Khunais bin Hudhafah (may Allah be pleased with him). He was among the companions of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and had participated in the Battle of Badr, and he passed away in Madinah. I met Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and offered Hafsa to him, and I said: If you wish, I will marry Hafsa to you. He said: I will think about it. I waited for a few days, then he met me and said: I do not intend to marry at this time. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I met Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and I said: If you wish, I will marry my daughter Hafsa to you. He did not give any answer, and because of this, I was more grieved with him than with Uthman. Nevertheless, I waited for a few days, and then a proposal for my daughter’s marriage came from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I married her to him. Later, when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) met me, he said: When you offered Hafsa to me and I did not give you any answer, you must have been upset with me? I said: Yes, indeed. He said: The only thing that prevented me from responding to your offer was that I had heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mention Sayyidah Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her). It was a secret, and I did not want to disclose the secret of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). If he (peace and blessings be upon him) had not married her, I would have married Hafsa.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … How significant it is that Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu, considering Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu to be great, offered his daughter to them, but he did not know that his daughter was destined to become the Mother of the Believers (Umm al-Mu’minin). All of this is due to the blessings of observing and respecting the Shari‘ah. Reflect on how Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu safeguarded the secret of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and how deeply he understood the rank and greatness of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
