Brief Explanation
Benefits: … According to the narration of Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi and Sunan Ibn Majah, after relating this hadith, Imam Qatadah recited this verse: {وَلَقَدْأَرْسَلْنَارُسُلًامِّنْقَبْلِکَ و َجَعَلْنَالَھُمْاَزْوَاجًاوَذُرِّیَّۃً } … “And We certainly sent messengers before you and assigned to them wives and offspring.” (Surah ar-Ra‘d: 38)
Imam Qatadah’s intent is that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was commanded to follow the example of the previous prophets, as Allah the Exalted has said: {فَبُہُدٰھُمُاقْتَدِہْ} … “Follow their guidance.” And the previous prophets had wives and children, therefore the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam married and Allah the Exalted also granted him offspring.
Thus, marriage is the sunnah (practice) of the prophets (alayhim as-salam).
