It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the young emigrants and said: Whoever among you has the ability, let him marry, for it is most effective in lowering the gaze and safeguarding the private parts. And whoever does not have the ability, let him fast, for indeed fasting breaks the desire.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … By "ability," what is meant is the capability to provide the dowry (mahr) and the maintenance (nafaqah) of the wife.
The meaning of "wijā’" is castration. Since fasting (sawm) weakens sexual desire, it has been likened to castration, because through castration as well, the matter of marriage comes to an end.
