Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is as if the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is rebuking and reprimanding, because there remains no means of conforming with that Prophet.
In the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), the method of drawing lines (khatt lagana) was as follows: a needy person would bring sweets or something similar to a soothsayer or foreteller. The soothsayer would say to him, “Sit down, I will draw lines for you.” There would be a boy in front of the soothsayer, who had a kohl stick with him. Then the boy would go towards soft earth and draw lines so quickly that they could not be counted. After that, he would start erasing the lines two by two. Now, if in the end two lines remained, they were considered a sign of success, and if one remained, it was considered a sign of failure.
