Hadith 6816

Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates from one of the wives of the Messenger of Allah that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and affirms what he says, his prayers will not be accepted for forty days.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Whoever affirms the claim of a soothsayer (kahin) and holds the belief that he possesses knowledge of the unseen (ghayb), then he truly becomes a disbeliever (kafir), as is established from the previous hadith. However, if a person goes to a soothsayer and affirms his claim regarding something that is within human capacity to know, then his prayer (salah) will not be accepted for forty days.

Imam Nawawi said: What is meant by the prayer not being accepted is that such a person will not receive the reward for the prayer; however, his obligation (fard) will be fulfilled, and he will not be required to repeat (i‘adah) the prayer.

Affirming the claim of a soothsayer is certainly an act of disbelief (kufr). But if such a person accepts other matters of the religion (such as tawhid and messengership, reward and punishment, etc.), then this act of disbelief will not be a cause for him to remain eternally in the Fire (mukhalad fi al-nar). Rather, this will be a case of “lesser disbelief” (kufr duna kufr), just as fighting a believer has been called disbelief (qitalahu kufr), yet this too does not cause a person to remain eternally in Hell.
