(Third chain of narration) There is a similar narration, except that in it: You had their hands and feet cut off from the opposite sides, and had iron rods passed through their eyes, and threw them on the stony ground of Harrah. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I saw one of them biting the ground with his mouth, then all of them died in that state. Muhammad bin Sirin said: This happened before the (relevant) punishments were revealed.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … These people were highway robbers (muharibeen). Regarding them, Allah the Exalted has said: { اِنَّمَاجَزٰٓؤُاالَّذِیْنَیُحَارِبُوْنَاللّٰہَوَرَسُوْلَہٗوَیَسْعَوْنَفِیالْاَرْضِفَسَادًااَنْیُّقَتَّلُوْٓااَوْیُصَلَّبُوْٓااَوْتُقَطَّعَاَیْدِیْہِمْوَاَرْجُلُھُمْمِّنْخِلَافٍاَوْیُنْفَوْامِنَالْاَرْضِذٰلِکَلَھُمْخِزْی’‘ فِیالدُّنْیَاوَلَھُمْفِیالْاٰخِرَۃِعَذَاب’‘ عَظِیْم’‘} (Al-Ma'idah: 33) “The recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive to spread corruption in the land is that they be killed, or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off from opposite sides, or be exiled from the land. That is their disgrace in this world, and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.”
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu said: This verse was revealed concerning the people of ‘Urainah. (Abu Dawood: 4369, Nasa’i: 7/100) The aforementioned hadiths mention these very individuals from the tribes of ‘Urainah and ‘Ukl, but this verse is not specific to these people; rather, it is a general ruling for all those who commit such crimes.
Janab Abu Qilabah said: “These are a people who stole, killed, disbelieved after having believed, and waged war against Allah and His Messenger.” … These people committed theft, murder, reverted to disbelief after faith, and waged war against Allah and His Messenger. (Sahih Bukhari: 6802, 6805)
From this discussion, it is established that these people were highway robbers (muharibeen) and they were given the punishment for waging war (muharabah).
The meaning of Imam Muhammad ibn Sirin’s statement is that the ruling of muharabah was revealed before the revelation of other prescribed punishments (hudud).
