Hadith 6799

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Haydah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had some people from our tribe arrested and imprisoned on the charge of accusation. Then a man from our tribe came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was delivering a sermon. He said: O Muhammad! Why have you imprisoned my neighbors? The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent with him. He said again: People say that you forbid evil, while you are spreading evil. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What is he saying? Sayyiduna Muawiyah says: I did not let the matter between the two become clear, fearing that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) might hear his words and curse my tribe, and then my tribe would never prosper. But the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept engaging with him until he understood him. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Did these people really say this accusatory thing? By Allah! If I do the act from which I have forbidden, then its burden will be upon me, not upon them. You release his neighbors.
