(Second chain) A man who had drunk wine was brought to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He struck him forty times with two palm branches. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) continued this practice, but when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became caliph, he consulted the people. Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) advised that the lightest prescribed punishment is eighty lashes, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that the drunkard be given eighty lashes.
