عَنْ حُضَيْنِ بْنِ الْمُنْذِرِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ وَعْلَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ الْوَلِيدَ بْنَ عُقْبَةَ صَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ الصُّبْحَ ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ إِلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ أَزِيدُكُمْ فَرُفِعَ ذَلِكَ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ أَنْ يُجْلَدَ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لِلْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ قُمْ يَا حَسَنُ فَاجْلِدْهُ قَالَ وَفِيمَ أَنْتَ وَذَاكَ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ بَلْ عَجَزْتَ وَوَهَنْتَ قُمْ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ فَاجْلِدْهُ فَقَامَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَجَلَدَهُ وَعَلِيٌّ يَعُدُّ فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ قَالَ أَمْسِكْ ثُمَّ قَالَ ضَرَبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْخَمْرِ أَرْبَعِينَ وَضَرَبَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَرْبَعِينَ وَعُمَرُ صَدْرًا مِنْ خِلَافَتِهِ ثُمَّ أَتَمَّهَا عُمَرُ ثَمَانِينَ وَكُلٌّ سُنَّةٌ
It is narrated from Huzain bin Munzir that Walid bin Uqbah led the people in the Fajr prayer. When he finished, he turned to the people and said: "Shall I lead you in more prayer?" This matter was presented before Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he ordered him to be flogged. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Hasan! Stand up and flog him." He said: "What do you have to do with this matter?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You have become weak and helpless." Then he said: "O Abdullah bin Ja'far! Stand up and flog him." So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) flogged him, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) began to count. When they reached forty, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Stop." Then he said: "The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave forty lashes for drinking wine. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) gave forty lashes throughout his era, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave forty lashes at the beginning of his caliphate, then Sayyiduna Umar completed the punishment for drinking wine to eighty (80) lashes."
