Yahya bin Yahya Ghassani says: I came to Madinah and met the governor of Madinah, Abu Bakr bin Muhammad. He said: A thief was brought to me, and my aunt, Umrah bint Abd al-Rahman, sent me a message saying: Do not make a hasty decision about this man; let me come to you so that I can tell you the hadith I heard from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) regarding the thief. So she came to me and informed me that she had heard from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about the thief. She said that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Cut off the thief’s hand for a quarter of a dinar; do not cut it off for less than that. In those days, a quarter of a dinar was equal to three dirhams, so a dinar was twelve dirhams. The theft of this thief was less than a quarter of a dinar, so I did not cut off his hand.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The weight of a dinar = 4 mashas, 4 ratis (four and a half mashas) = 4.374 grams A quarter of a dinar: 1 masha, 1 rati, that is: approximately 1.093 grams It should be remembered that "dinar" refers to the above-mentioned weight of gold. It is preferable to make rupees from 4 mashas, 4 ratis of gold, then divide the result by 4; the price of a quarter dinar will be determined. Then, by considering the value of the stolen item, it will be decided whether the thief's hand should be cut or not. In the time of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the value of a quarter dinar was equal to the value of three dirhams of silver. However, in this era, the value of a quarter dinar is much higher than three dirhams, and that is as follows: if the price of one tola of gold is 50,000 rupees, then the price of a quarter dinar comes to a little less than 5,000 rupees, whereas the price of three dirhams of silver is even less than 1,000 rupees.
