Hadith 6685

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani, and Sayyiduna Shibl (may Allah be pleased with them), they say: We were present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man stood up and said: I beseech you by Allah to judge between us according to the Book of Allah. His opponent, who was more intelligent than him, also stood up and said: He is speaking the truth, judge between us according to the Book of Allah, and allow me to speak. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Speak. He said: My son was working for him as a laborer, and he committed adultery with his wife. I gave him one hundred sheep and a servant as compensation. Then, when I asked the people of knowledge, they told me that my son should be given one hundred lashes and exiled for one year, and this man's wife should be stoned to death. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Him in Whose hand is my soul! I will judge between you according to the Book of Allah. The one hundred sheep and the servant will be returned to you, your son will be given one hundred lashes and exiled for one year, and O Anas! Go to this man's wife, if she confesses to adultery, then stone her to death. When Sayyiduna Anas went to the woman, she confessed, so he stoned her to death. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) was a man from the Banu Aslam tribe.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This hadith establishes that the punishment for an unmarried person (convicted of zina) is one hundred lashes and one year of exile, and the punishment for a married person is that he should be stoned to death, that is, his life should be ended by being struck with stones. In these matters, ransom does not prove beneficial.

Dear readers! Reflect that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam mentioned the following in his judgment: the return of one hundred sheep and a servant, one year of exile for the son, one hundred lashes, and in the case of confession, stoning the woman. Of these, only one hundred lashes are mentioned in the Noble Qur’an, yet the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is saying regarding all these matters: “I will judge between you according to the Book of Allah.” From this, it is understood that the judgments of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam are, in fact, the interpretation of the Noble Qur’an, and regarding them it can be said that these judgments are in accordance with the Book of Allah. Those who cast aspersions on the authority of the blessed ahadith, or do not accept anything in addition to the Noble Qur’an through them, should reflect upon such Prophetic ahadith. Allah Ta‘ala has made the statement and action of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam authoritative, and has appointed him as the interpreter and explainer of His Book.
