It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When an adulterer commits adultery, he is not a believer at that moment; when a thief steals, he is not a believer at that moment; and when a drunkard drinks alcohol, he is not a believer at that moment. And (even after these crimes) the door of repentance remains open.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In this hadith, there is a severe reprimand for the adulterer, thief, and drunkard.
“He is not a believer at that moment”—by this, the intention of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is that these acts are contrary to faith; faith prevents from them. When a person commits these evils, he is not acting upon the demands of faith; in this sense, it is as if he is not a believer. This absolutely does not mean that he is completely expelled from faith and becomes a disbeliever, because it is an established principle of Ahl al-Sunnah that by committing any sin, even a major one (kabirah), a Muslim does not become a disbeliever. This principle is decisively proven by many verses and hadiths. However, the purpose of this principle is not to show leniency to such criminals, but rather to clarify that they have not exited the fold of Islam and are not eternally deserving of Hell.
