Hadith 6642

It is narrated from ‘Ikrimah that some heretics were brought to Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and they had their books with them. Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) first ordered a fire to be kindled, so a fire was lit, then he burned them and their books. When Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) learned of this incident, he said: If I had been there, I would not have burned them, because the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade burning. However, I would have killed them, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever changes his religion, kill him. Also, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not punish people with the punishment of Allah the Exalted.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … A zindiq is one who outwardly professes Islam, but inwardly harbors disbelief and considers the rulings of the Shari‘ah to be invalid. Such people are disbelievers in Allah the Exalted and His religion, and are apostates from Islam. The zanadiqah who were brought before Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu were, in fact, followers of Abdullah bin Saba. This Ibn Saba was a Jew who, in order to create discord within the Ummah of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, outwardly donned the cloak of Islam. It was he who incited people against Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu, and then what happened, happened. Afterwards, he brought his vile self among the Shia people and succeeded in making a group of ignorant people chant the slogan that Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu alone is divine.
