Hadith 6624

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a woman from the Makhzum tribe used to borrow goods and then deny it. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered her hand to be cut off.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Apparently, from this blessed hadith it seems that the woman's hand was cut off due to her denial of the item she had borrowed. However, the majority of scholars hold the opinion that the hand cannot be cut off merely due to such denial. In fact, in some authentic ahadith, it has been clarified that this woman had committed theft, and therefore the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) ordered her hand to be cut off due to that theft. This hadith should thus be understood as being concise.

The meaning is that there were two evils present in this woman: she had committed theft, and after borrowing items, she would also deny having taken them. Her hand was cut off due to the first crime. (Abdullah Rafiq)
