Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Shall I not show you the ablution (wudu) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" The people said: "Yes, of course." Then he called for water, rinsed his mouth three times, sniffed water into his nose and blew it out three times, washed his face three times, washed his arms three times each, then wiped his head and washed both feet three times each, and then said: "Know that the ears are part of the head. Indeed, I have presented to you the ablution of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." In the chapter of washing the face, the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) has already passed that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped his head once and used to say, "The ears are part of the head."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The words "al-udhunani min ar-ra’s" (the ears are part of the head) are established from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. There are several chains of transmission from the noble Companions for this, for example: Sayyiduna Abu Umamah, Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, Sayyidah Aishah, Sayyiduna Abu Musa, Sayyiduna Anas, Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zayd. See: Silsilah Sahihah: 36, Irwa’ al-Ghalil: 84. The jurisprudential implication of these words is that the ruling for wiping (masah) the head is the same as that for the ears; if wiping the head once or three times is valid, then the same applies to the ears. Also, it is not necessary to take new water for the ears. There are three methods of wiping the head: over the entire head, over the entire turban, and over the front part of the head and the rest over the turban. Wiping the head three times is also valid.
