It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man struck another with a horn and injured his foot. The injured man said: O Messenger of Allah! Have me take retribution from him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not be hasty, wait until your wound heals. But when the man insisted on taking retribution, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) allowed him to do so. However, after taking retribution, the one who took it became lame, while the one from whom retribution was taken became healthy. Now the one who took retribution came again to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I have become lame and the man concerned has recovered. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Did I not command you not to take retribution until your wound healed? But you disobeyed me, so Allah deprived you of healing and your wound was wasted. Then, after the incident of the man who became lame, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave this ruling: Whoever is wounded should not take retribution until his wound heals; when his wound heals, then he may take retribution.
