Narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever commits suicide with an iron weapon, then that iron will be in his hand and he will keep striking it into his belly forever and ever in the fire of Hell. Whoever commits suicide with poison, then that poison will be in his hand and he will keep drinking it forever and ever in the fire of Hell. And whoever commits suicide by falling from a mountain, then he will keep falling from the mountain forever and ever in the fire of Hell.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Suicide is forbidden; there is no hardship or trial in this world on the basis of which suicide can be considered permissible. The examples of those Companions who had to pass through severe trials due to the crime of accepting Islam are clear. May Allah protect the honor and sanctity of the daughters of Islam. When they are subjected to oppression, they begin to prefer suicide, but doing so is not correct. In this oppression, they have no sin whatsoever; they should entrust their matter to Allah and be patient. May Allah guide such criminals, and if not, may He destroy and ruin them. (Ameen) From other texts, it is understood that suicide is a forgivable offense for a Muslim. One evidence is as follows:
“When the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam migrated to Madinah, Sayyiduna Tufayl bin Amr radi Allahu anhu also migrated, and with him was a man from his people. They found the climate of Madinah unfavorable, and that man became ill. In a state of impatience, he took a fruit and cut the joints of his fingers, and blood flowed until he died. Afterwards, Sayyiduna Tufayl saw him in a dream in a very good state, but he had covered both his hands. Sayyiduna Tufayl radi Allahu anhu said to him: ‘What did your Lord do with you?’ He said: ‘Because of my migration to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Allah forgave me.’ Sayyiduna Tufayl asked: ‘Why are your hands covered?’ He replied: ‘It was said to me: We will not repair what you yourself have ruined.’” Then when Sayyiduna Tufayl narrated this dream to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he said: “O Allah, forgive his hands as well.” (Sahih Muslim: 116)
The following interpretations can be made of the hadith we are explaining and other similar ahadith: (1) In them is a mention of rebuke and reprimand so that the abhorrence and ugliness of suicide may become clear. (2) If Allah wishes to give such a person complete punishment, then he will be deserving of that punishment, but Allah will show mercy to His monotheistic servants and will remove them from Hell after some time. (3) By “eternity” is meant a long period.
