Hadith 6441

Narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan, may Allah be pleased with him, who was among those who narrated few hadiths, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: It is possible that Allah Almighty may forgive every sin, except for the person who dies in a state of disbelief and the one who deliberately kills a believer.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: {اِنَّ الّذَیِنْ کَفَرُوْا وَمَاتُوْا وَھُمْ کُفَّارٌ اُولٰئِکَ عَلَیْھِمْ لَعْنَۃُ اللّٰہِ وَالْمَلَائِکَۃِ وَالنَّاسِ اَجْمَعِیْنَ۔} … “Indeed, those who disbelieved and died while they were disbelievers—upon them is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people.” (Surah al-Baqarah: 161)

To kill a believer is a grave crime. “And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell, wherein he will abide forever. And Allah’s wrath is upon him, and His curse, and He has prepared for him a great punishment.” (Surah al-Nisa: 93)

There is similarity between the two aforementioned crimes in that, due to repentance, they can be forgiven. However, if one dies in that state, disbelief (kufr) is an unforgivable crime, while murder is forgivable; the killer of a believer will not be eternally in Hell. In light of other texts, this verse will be understood as a severe warning.
