عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَيْرُ النَّاسِ قَرْنِي ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ يَأْتِي بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ قَوْمٌ تَسْبِقُ شَهَادَاتُهُمْ أَيْمَانَهُمْ وَأَيْمَانُهُمْ شَهَادَاتِهِمْ
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The best of people is my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them, then those who come after them. Then there will come people whose testimonies will precede their oaths, and their oaths will precede their testimonies.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The last sentence of this hadith can have two meanings: one is that swearing an oath along with testimony is blameworthy, and the other is that one should not adopt a careless attitude in matters of oaths and testimony. Rather, one should first consider whether there is even a need for these matters or not, or whether only an oath is needed or only testimony. Furthermore, one should consider on which occasions oaths and testimony are blameworthy and where they are praiseworthy.
