عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَيْرُ أُمَّتِي الْقَرْنُ الَّذِي بُعِثْتُ فِيهِمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ أَقَالَ الثَّالِثَةَ أَمْ لَا ثُمَّ يَجِيءُ قَوْمٌ يُحِبُّونَ السَّمَانَةَ يَشْهَدُونَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُسْتَشْهَدُوا
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The best era in my Ummah is the one in which I am present, then the era of those who come after them, then the era of those who come after them. (The narrator says that I do not know whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said it a third time or not.) Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then there will come people who will love obesity and will give testimony before it is asked for.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … What is meant by preferring obesity is indulgence in luxury and excessive eating and drinking, the result of which manifests as obesity.
In the ahadith of the previous chapter, giving testimony before it is requested was praised, whereas in this hadith it is being condemned. The reconciliation and harmonization (jam‘ wa tatbīq) is that when a person has knowledge about his own right, but even then testimony is given in his favor without his request, this is blameworthy testimony, because it is possible that the person wishes to forgo his right, or at the very least does not want it to be mentioned in front of people. Some people have interpreted the blameworthy testimony in this hadith as referring to false testimony.
