It is narrated from Saeed bin Musayyib that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My opinion is that the blood money should be given only to the 'Asabah (male agnates), because they are the ones who pay the blood money. Has any one of you heard anything from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this? Sayyiduna Dahiak bin Sufyan Kalabi (may Allah be pleased with him)—the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had appointed him as the governor over the Bedouin people—stood up and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me this written order that I should make the wife of Ashyam Dubabi an heir from her husband's blood money.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … A husband, in his capacity as a husband, is not considered an 'asabah (agnatic heir) of his wife. Therefore, Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu intended that the husband should not be given anything from the blood money (diyah) of the murdered woman, because those who pay the diyah of the killer are the 'asabah. However, when he became aware of the blessed hadith that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had given the husband his share from the diyah of his murdered wife, he abandoned his intention.
