It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Actions are judged only and only by intentions, and every person will have only that which he intended. So whoever's migration is for Allah and His Messenger, then his migration is for Allah and His Messenger. And whoever's migration is for worldly gain, he will attain it, and whoever's migration is for a woman to marry her, he will marry her. In any case, his migration will be for that which he migrated towards."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This is an extremely important and comprehensive hadith, and this blessed hadith plays a role in performing every good deed and in abstaining from every evil. There are two types of intention (niyyah): one type of intention distinguishes righteous acts (a‘maal-e-salihah) from one another—for example, the four units (rak‘ahs) of Zuhr, the four units of ‘Asr, the four units of Sunnah before each of these, obligatory fast (fardh sawm), voluntary fast (nafl sawm), etc. At the beginning of each act, it will be distinguished from other acts by intention. The second type of intention determines the purpose of the doer—whether the act is being done sincerely (ikhlas) for Allah Ta‘ala, or whether its aim and objective is ostentation (riya’), showing off, or fear of someone other than Allah. Since ablution (wudu) is a great virtue and act of worship, it is also necessary to make intention for it; without intention, ablution will not be valid.
