Thumamah bin Hazn Qushayri says: The day Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was put to trial, I was present that day. He looked out at those who were besieging him and said: Bring to me those two men who have incited you against me (by this he meant Muhammad bin Abi Bakr and Muhammad bin Abi Hudhayfah). So they were called. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to them: I ask you by Allah, do you know that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, there was not enough space for the worshippers in the mosque? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Who will buy this land from his pure wealth and then make it like the rest of the Muslims, so that in exchange for it he will have a house in Paradise better than it? So I bought that place from my pure wealth and dedicated it for the Muslims, but today you are preventing me from praying two rak‘ahs in it. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I ask you by Allah, do you know that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, there was no well with sweet water in it except the well of Rumah? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Who will buy this well from his pure wealth and then draw water from it like the rest of the Muslims, so that he will have something better than it in Paradise? Then he said: Do you know that I was the one who equipped the army in hardship, meaning the Battle of Tabuk? They said: Yes.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … How beautiful it is that in the expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid Nabawi) and the well of Rumah (Bi’r Rumah), Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu had the same right as any other ordinary Muslim, even though it was Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu who spent his wealth to purchase the land and the well. Indeed, when the intention is solely to seek reward from Allah Ta’ala and to serve Islam, such beautiful things are heard. But now, … … , by Allah! I do not understand how to express what is in my heart. Now, when someone places a chair in the mosque, he is not satisfied until his name is inscribed upon it. If someone receives a receipt for a donation of one thousand rupees but is not given special protocol or a place on the stage, then his airs … , those who collect charity long for the smiles of those who give charity. The attention of the administrators of mosques and madrasas has become focused on the beauty of the buildings and on gaining the approval of those who provide funds. In any mosque, according to the Shari’ah principles, the highest position is that of the servant of the mosque, the imam, and the khatib, but now these great people are regarded as nothing more than salaried employees. Every worshipper in the mosque considers himself fully entitled to object to his imam and khatib, and then his objection is seriously examined. Now, there is no distinction left at all that the khatib or imam of such-and-such mosque is predominantly virtuous. These are the blameworthy characteristics of this era, in which materialism and outward show prevail, the reality of the situation is concealed, and there is a lack of purification and cleanliness (tazkiyah wa taharah).

It is requested that the words which the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam spoke regarding the expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque and the purchase of Bi’r Rumah, and the manner in which Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu became their embodiment, be reflected upon, and that the reward for our good deeds be deferred until the Hereafter.
