Sayyiduna Dhu’l-Jawshan says: When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the Battle of Badr, I came to him and said: O Muhammad! I have brought for you the foal of a mare, which has a little whiteness on its face, so that you may accept it as a gift. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I have no need of it, but if you wish, I can give you the fine armors of Badr in exchange for it. He said: No, I would not even take a slave girl for it today. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then I have no need of it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Dhu’l-Jawshan! Will you not accept Islam, so that you may be among the first people of this religion? He said: No, I will not do so. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Why, what is the reason for this? I said: I see that your people (the Quraysh) are still fighting you, (it is not clear what the outcome will be). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Have you not heard of their destruction at Badr? He said: Yes, I have heard of that. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: We will clarify for you. He said: If you overcome the Ka‘bah and make it your abode, then it will be something. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you live, you will see this with your own eyes. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Bilal! Take this man’s provision bag and fill it with ‘ajwah dates and give it to him. Sayyiduna Dhu’l-Jawshan says: When I returned from the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: Beware! This is the best horseman of Banu ‘Amir. Sayyiduna Dhu’l-Jawshan says: (After a long time had passed) I saw a rider coming towards me, while I was at that time in a lowland (in Yemen) with my family. I said: Where have you come from? He said: From Makkah. I said: What happened to the people? He said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has overcome Makkah. I said: May my mother lose me! If I had become Muslim that day and asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for Hira, he would have given it to me.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From the ahadith mentioned in the benefits of the previous chapter, it was understood that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to accept gifts from non-Muslims, whereas the ahadith of this chapter indicate not doing so. To resolve this apparent contradiction, the Imams of Islam and the hadith scholars have presented the following reconciliations:

(1) If there is hope that a particular non-Muslim may embrace Islam, then his gift should be accepted to win his heart and for the purpose of softening his heart (ta’lif al-qalb). However, if a non-Muslim merely seeks friendship through his gift, then his present should be rejected.

(2) The ahadith prohibiting (accepting gifts from non-Muslims) have been abrogated, and the ruling of the ahadith permitting it remains.

(3) Taking into account the situation and context, gifts were either accepted or not accepted in order to encourage the concerned person towards accepting Islam.

(4) When there is a fear that love for the polytheist may develop in the heart, then the gifts will be rejected. (And Allah knows best what is correct)
