Narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I picked up one hundred dinars (which someone had lost) and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Announce it for one year. I announced it for one year and then came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said that I have announced it for one year. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Announce it for another year. So I announced it for another year and then came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said that I have announced it for another year. This time, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Now count them, recognize its strap, and benefit from them.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In one narration of Musnad Ahmad, there is mention of announcing for three years. In the ahadith of the previous chapter, one year is mentioned, and in these ahadith, three years are mentioned. The ways to reconcile and harmonize these are as follows:
(1) It is necessary to announce for one year, and it is recommended (mustahabb) to announce for three years; that is, after one year, the item may be used, but it is better to continue announcing for an additional two years.
(2) For an ordinary item, announcement will be made for one year, and for a valuable item, for three years.
(3) A person who, after using the item, can easily arrange for its return if the owner comes, should announce for one year; and one who fears that if he uses the item, it will be difficult to arrange for it again, should announce for three years. Generally, after such a period, it becomes difficult for the original owner to come.
