Sayyiduna Umair, the freed slave of Abi al-Lahm (may Allah be pleased with him), says: I was migrating to Madinah with my masters. When we neared Madinah, my masters left me behind and themselves entered Madinah. I became extremely hungry. Some people passing by on their way to Madinah saw me and said: (The solution to your hunger is) that you enter Madinah and eat fruit from a garden. So I entered a garden and had just plucked two bunches of dates when the owner of the garden arrived, caught me, and took me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him my whole story. At that time, I was wearing two garments. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Which of these two garments is better? I pointed to one of them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Take this one. And he gave the other to the owner of the garden and let me go.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … We have already clarified in the benefits of Hadith number (6193) that a needy person may eat from an orchard without the owner's permission, however, he may not take anything away with him. But according to this hadith, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam held the one who did so responsible and imposed a penalty of giving a garment. The answer given to this is that the man had picked more dates than his need; one bunch was for his necessity, and for the other bunch, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gave his garment to the owner as compensation.
