Hadith 617

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) perform ablution; he washed his face three times, washed his hands three times, wiped his head, and washed his feet.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Rulings established from authentic (sahih) hadiths regarding ablution (wudu):

The Sunnah Method of Ablution: … To begin with intention (niyyah), to recite Bismillah, to wash the hands three times and to interlace the fingers, to rinse the mouth (madmadah) three times and to sniff water into the nose (istinshaq) three times, and to perform both of these actions with only one handful of water, to wash the face three times and to comb through the beard, to wash the right arm including the elbow three times and then the left arm likewise, to wipe (masah) the head and ears with one handful of water in such a way that both hands are moved from the front part of the head to the nape and then brought back to the forehead, and to wipe the inner part of the ears with the index fingers and the outer part with the thumbs, then to wash the right foot three times and the left foot three times and to interlace the toes, and after ablution to sprinkle one handful of water over the private parts and to recite the prescribed supplications.

Notes: … Washing the limbs three times is superior; if all the limbs are washed once or twice, or if during one ablution some limbs are washed once, some twice, and some three times, the ablution will still be valid. When rinsing the mouth, the water should be moved around inside the mouth, and water should be drawn into the nose by inhaling and expelled by exhaling, and both of these actions should be performed with one handful of water, that is, half a handful for rinsing the mouth and half for cleaning the nose. There are three methods of wiping over the head: over the entire head, over the entire turban, and over the front part of the head and the rest over the turban. Wiping the head three times is also valid. There is no authoritative evidence for wiping over the neck and its sides. The hadith in which raising the finger after ablution is mentioned is weak, and looking towards the sky is also not established from any authentic hadith.
