It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade muhaqalah. Imam Shu’bah says: I asked Hakam what muhaqalah is. He said: To cultivate land on the basis of a third or a fourth share. When Ibrahim heard this, he disliked cultivating land on the basis of a third or a fourth share, but he did not see any harm in taking barren land in exchange for dirhams.
