Hadith 6092

Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you disagree about the road, then leave seven hand-spans and build the buildings, and whoever asks his neighbor to allow him to place a beam on his wall, he should let him place it.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Islam is such a perfect religion that it not only teaches the ways to improve the Hereafter, which is its primary objective, but also establishes laws for living in this world with ease and prosperity, free from poverty and narrow-mindedness. Where the Shariah has declared a spacious house to be a sign of peace and happiness, there, due to open pathways and wide streets, many difficulties are also alleviated. If, in this matter, people mutually agree upon a certain limit, that is acceptable; otherwise, the command of Shariah will be enforced, according to which the width of a thoroughfare should be seven handspans, that is, ten and a half feet. Having streets ten or eleven feet wide is an important requirement of the present age.
