It is narrated from ‘Ikrimah bin Salamah that there were two brothers from Banu Mughira. One of them swore an oath to free a slave and said that he would not allow his neighbor to place a beam in his wall. Then, when both of them met Sayyiduna Majma‘ bin Yazid Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) and several Companions, they said: We testify that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A neighbor should not prevent his neighbor from placing a beam or the like in his wall. Upon hearing this, the one who had sworn the oath said: O my brother! I have realized that this decision will be against me and in your favor, while I have also sworn an oath. Now, you may build a pillar next to my wall. So he did so, and then placed wood on the pillar. ‘Amr said to me: I had seen this thing.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In these hadiths, a glimpse of the rights of neighbors has been shown. In this era of selfishness and self-interest, no regard is given to the observance of these rights, especially in urban life. If a person wishes to build a house or a hut, and there are already neighbors’ walls present on one or two sides, then the requirement of the Shariah is that this person should not be burdened with the trouble of building a wall or pillar on those sides. By fulfilling this right, his work will also be completed quickly, there will be less labor, and expenses will be saved. However, when it comes time to fulfill this right, someone thinks that extra weight will be placed on his wall, another says that his wall will be damaged, someone else worries that tomorrow this person might claim ownership over the wall. All these concerns arise when there is no enthusiasm or desire to fulfill the requirements of the Shariah. If this right of the neighbor is fulfilled with the understanding that it is the Sunnah and command of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, then as a result, mercy, blessings, and reward are certainly attained, inshaAllah, and there will be no harm. And if any harm does occur, then for the sake of Allah, it should be borne with patience and a cheerful face, and one should remain silent out of respect for the hadith of the Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
