Hadith 6037

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man passed away and left behind a mudabbar slave in his inheritance, while he was also in debt. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the people to sell this slave for the payment of his debt, so they sold him for eight hundred dirhams.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … “Mudabbar” refers to a slave whose master, during his own lifetime, declares that the slave will be set free after the master’s death.

The original form of this narration is described in the following hadith:

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu that an Ansari man named Abu Mazkur made his slave a mudabbar, while he possessed no other wealth besides him. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam called for this slave and said: “Who will buy this man? Who will buy this man?” Thus, Sayyiduna Nu‘aym bin Abdullah radi Allahu anhu bought him for eight hundred dirhams. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gave Abu Mazkur the price and said: “When a person is poor, he should spend first on himself; if there is surplus wealth, then he should spend it on his family; if there is still something left after them, then he should spend it on his relatives; and if there is still any wealth left, then he may spend it here and there.” (Sahih Muslim: 997, Musnad Ahmad: 3/305)
