Hadith 6035

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) attended a funeral, he would ask: "Does your companion have any debt?" If the people said, "Yes, he has," then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would ask: "Has he left any wealth to pay off the debt?" If the people said, "Yes," then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would lead his funeral prayer. But if the people said, "He has not left any wealth," then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "You pray over your companion yourselves." Then, when Allah Almighty opened the doors of conquests for him (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "I am closer to the believers than their own selves, so whoever dies leaving a debt, its payment is my responsibility, and whoever dies leaving wealth, it is for his heirs."
