Hadith 6034

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) would not perform the funeral prayer for a person in debt. Once, a deceased was brought to him and he (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) asked whether he had any debt. The people said: Yes, he owes two dinars. He (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Then you yourselves perform the funeral prayer of your companion. At that moment, Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! They are my responsibility. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) performed his funeral prayer. When Allah Almighty opened the doors of victories for him (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), he said: I am closer to every believer than his own self, so now whoever dies leaving a debt, its payment will be my responsibility, and whoever dies leaving wealth, it will be for his heirs.
