Hadith 5990

It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Fadala bin Ubaid, may Allah be pleased with him, he says: We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the day of the conquest of Khaybar. The Jews sold an uqiyyah of gold in exchange for two or three dinars, but the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do not sell gold for gold except that it is equal for equal.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The summary of this chapter is that if one wishes to purchase an item in exchange for gold, and that item contains both gold and something else, or if one wishes to purchase an item in exchange for silver, and that item contains both silver and something else, then there will be two separate transactions for that item: the gold contained within it will be transacted separately, and an equivalent amount of gold must be given in exchange for it, and the other item will be transacted separately, and so on by analogy. Gold and silver are mentioned here as examples; otherwise, this same ruling can apply to the other commodities subject to riba al-fadl (usury of excess), for example, purchasing wheat and barley in exchange for wheat—on such an occasion, there will be a separate transaction for the wheat and a separate one for the barley. The intent of the Shariah is that riba al-fadl should not enter anywhere. If readers do not understand these terminologies and rulings, they should contact the people of knowledge and strive to acquire an understanding of the religion.
