It is narrated from Sayyiduna Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Measure your grain, for there will be blessing in it for you.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … By obeying the command of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, by knowing the exact quantity of grain, by reciting “Bismillah” at the time of measuring and weighing, and especially by using the Madinan mudd and sa‘ (standard measures), there will be blessing (barakah) in the grain.
However, the following action of Sayyidah A’ishah radi Allahu anha appears to be in contradiction to this blessed hadith:
Sayyidah says: “The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam passed away, and there was nothing in my house that a living being could eat except for a portion of barley on a shelf of mine. I kept eating from it for a long time, but when I measured it, it finished.” (Sahih Bukhari: 3097)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar has reconciled these two hadiths in the following manner:
The meaning of the hadith of Sayyiduna Miqdam radi Allahu anhu is that when purchasing grain, it should be measured, and the reason for this measuring should be to fulfill the command of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. When this command is not fulfilled, then due to disobedience, the blessing in the grain will be removed. And the action of Sayyidah A’ishah radi Allahu anha pertains to the fact that her measuring was for the purpose of testing, and thus a deficiency occurred in between. The conclusion of both hadiths is that blessing is not merely connected to measuring, but rather to obedience to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Likewise, the blessing is removed from measuring when the purpose of measuring is to oppose or test the hadith. (Fath al-Bari: 4/346)
‘Allamah Sindhi rahimahullah has reconciled the two hadiths as follows: When a person brings grain into the house, he should not measure it, but when taking it out to eat, he should measure it.
However, what appears to us as the preferred view is that when a person brings grain into the house, he should bring it after measuring it, and in the case of purchasing and bringing it, it will have to be measured anyway. But when taking it out to eat, he should continue to take it out without measuring, just as Sayyidah A’ishah radi Allahu anha did, and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu would also eat the dates from his bag in this manner.
