Chapter: The command to measure and weigh, and the prohibition of selling grain before two measures have been run
Hadith 5888

عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَهُ يَا عُثْمَانُ إِذَا اشْتَرَيْتَ فَاكْتَلْ وَإِذَا بِعْتَ فَكِلْ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Uthman! When you buy something, measure it, and when you sell something, measure it as well.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu, who says: “The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade the sale of grain until two measures (sa‘) have been applied to it: the measure of the seller and the measure of the buyer.” (Ibn Majah: 2228)
From these ahadith, it is understood that at the time of buying and selling, items should be measured or weighed. In both of the following ahadith, this very practice of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is being described. By acting upon this command of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, there will be blessing, and the possibility of ill suspicion will also be eliminated.
From these ahadith, it is understood that at the time of buying and selling, items should be measured or weighed. In both of the following ahadith, this very practice of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is being described.
