It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) forbade selling fruit before it ripens, grapes before they turn black, and grain before it hardens.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The summary of all the aforementioned narrations is that fruit attached to trees and plants cannot be sold before it ripens. The sign of ripening is specific to each fruit. Every fruit or crop passes through various stages and conditions before ripening; among these, there are such conditions in which even a slight rainfall or a gust of wind can prove very harmful, while in other conditions, rain and wind are extremely necessary. However, when the crop has ripened and is ready, it is generally observed that heat or cold, moderate amounts of rain, and the blowing or ceasing of winds do not affect the crop. Yes, rarely it does happen that even after the crop has ripened, due to some major calamity, it is completely destroyed. What should be done in such a situation will be explained in the next chapter. In any case, landowners should remain cautious and should not sell any crop before it has ripened.
