عَنْ إِيَاسِ بْنِ عَبْدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا تَبِيعُوا فَضْلَ الْمَاءِ فَإِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ بَيْعِ الْمَاءِ وَالنَّاسُ يَبِيعُونَ مَاءَ الْفُرَاتِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Iyas bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: Do not sell water in excess of your need, because the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the selling of water. People have even started selling the water of the river Euphrates.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is possible that Sayyiduna Iyas radi Allahu anhu witnessed a situation where people would fetch water from the Euphrates without any wage or hardship, and then sell the water in excess of their own need. Then, he narrated this hadith to those people in order to prevent them from acting in this manner.
