Hadith 5820

عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ بَيْعِ الْوَلَاءِ وَهِبَتِهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade selling and gifting of wala’.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Wala’ is a right similar to lineage (nasab), therefore, just as lineage cannot be sold or gifted, likewise the buying and selling of wala’ is also not permissible.

Wala’: This is a relationship that is established between a slave (ghulam) or a slave-girl (amat) and their master upon being set free. One of its benefits is that through it, the emancipator or his ‘asaba (agnatic relatives) by himself become the heirs of the freed person.
