Hadith 576

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mus'ab bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that during the illness of Ibn 'Amir, some people came to him and began to praise him, but Sayyiduna 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "I am not among those who deceive you. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Indeed, Allah Almighty does not accept charity from treacherous wealth, nor prayer without ablution.'"

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Ibn ‘Amir’s name is Amir ‘Abdullah. He served as the governor of Basrah on behalf of ‘Uthman Ghani (radi Allahu anhu). When people came to visit him during his illness, they began to praise him. At that time, ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhu) was present with Amir ‘Abdullah. He did not like the people’s praise, so on this occasion, he narrated the present hadith regarding the matter of betrayal in service. The purpose was to show that, in the position of leadership, a person inevitably makes mistakes. Therefore, instead of praising the leader, he should be encouraged towards repentance and seeking forgiveness, rather than having his attention diverted from his sins and shortcomings by praise.
