Hadith 5755

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the presence of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the owners of camels and goats began to boast to one another. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Pride and arrogance are found among the owners of camels, and tranquility and dignity are found among the owners of goats. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When Musa (peace be upon him) was sent (as a prophet), he used to herd the goats of his people, and when I was sent (as a prophet), I too used to herd goats in Ji'ad.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Ji'ad is the name of a low-lying place or a mountain in Makkah Mukarramah.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar said that Khattabi states: The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) condemned the owners of camels and horses because these people, becoming heedless of religious matters, remain occupied with their livestock, the result of which is that they become hard-hearted.

Hafiz (rahimahullah) himself said: The reason for associating tranquility (sakinah) specifically with the owners of sheep is that they are less in wealth and abundance compared to the owners of camels, and these two things—wealth and abundance—are the causes of pride and arrogance. (Fath al-Bari: 6/433, 434)

This is a system of Allah Ta'ala: just as there is a difference between sheep and camels—that the sheep is a noble and non-harmful animal, while the camel is rebellious and harmful—this temperament of the animals is transferred to their owners.
