Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Assign me a responsibility through which my livelihood can be maintained. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Hamza! Do you prefer to give life to a soul or to take it? He replied: Yes, to give life to a soul. Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then take care of your own soul.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Sayyiduna Hamzah radi Allahu anhu had come to the service of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam with the intention that he be appointed to the collection of zakat, so that the wage he would receive in return could support his livelihood. However, Sayyiduna Hamzah radi Allahu anhu was from Banu Hashim, and for Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib, charity (sadaqah) and zakat were forbidden. Therefore, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, in order to explain this matter to him, began by speaking about giving life to the soul or causing its death, because if Sayyiduna Hamzah had been appointed as a zakat collector, it would have been as if it were the death of his soul, since due to unlawful (haram) sustenance, one faces many deprivations, and in fact, acts of worship are not accepted at all.
