Sayyiduna Abu Malik Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) says: My father, Sayyiduna Tariq bin Ashyam (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated to me that when a man would come to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and say: O Messenger of Allah! When I ask my Lord, what should I say? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would tell him to say: "Allahumma ighfir li warhamni wahdini warzuqni" (O Allah! Forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, and provide for me). At the same time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered four fingers except the thumb and said: These words will gather for you the goodness of this world and the Hereafter.
